    I am trying to upload images and it does not create the thumbnails. I have edited my memory limits and still it is a no go. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can make the broken image icon go away? :)

    thank you

    Same here.

    It all worked fine with my two wp blogs till i updated ngg to 1.8.1 (both wp installations were 3.1.4).
    One of the wp installations now is working (ngg 1.8.1, wp 3.1.4),
    the second one was broken (ngg 1.8.1, wp 3.1.4): it doesn't create thumbnails anymore except i try to edit thumbnails manually (manage gallery -> choose gallery -> edit thumbnail at the single preview) - but this only works sometimes.

    I already updated the broken one from wp 3.1.4 to 3.2 but this didn't solve the problem. Memory limit is set to 32 mb. Both wp installations are hosted by the same provider and the settings are the same.

    Gallery dashboard - plugin test:
    1. (broken) Installation says at testing image editing: only pics up to 800x600 px can be created, nothing more.
    2. (working) Installation: is able to create a pic of 3072x2304 px

    Does anyone have an idea?

    Thanks! ;)

    I'm having same problem here on one of my WP multi site wesbites. No thumbnails can be generated. There is an erro message that comes up, but it flashes briefly and I can't read it. It works fine on other wesbites within the same WP multi site environment.

    yup, I get the flash, and then nothing. I tried to create them manually in the plugin, but that does not work either.

    As a temporary fix, I created thumbnails myself, added thumbs_ to every thumbnail file and uploaded to the thumbnails directory for the corresponding gallery and it works.
    You can see the working photo gallery on this page:

    I will wait a couple days for a permanent fix and if not then switch to something else.

    I tried to create them manually in the plugin, but that does not work either.

    It doesn't work every time here too but if I choose a smaller sized section it works.
    I also thought about creating the thumbs manually and loading them up into the thumbs-directory but that's a little bit cumbersome and I'm spoiled by ngg :D

    Hi there!

    After updating WP to 3.2.1 and NGG to 1.8.2 the problem still exists. No thumbnails are automatically created, the "popup" for the process of thumbnail-creation shows a progress to 100% but does not close itself and no thumbnails have been created...

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks ;)

    I have a similar issue - it creates the 1st thumbnail if uploading several files but won't make any more.

    Having the exact same issues here. Also getting a 'Division by Zero' error when I click 'Edit Thumb' for those images.

    Same here but with a twist. Run WordPress 3.2.1 and 1.8.2 gallery. Everything worked fine with the 1.8.1, no problems. I update and whoosh the menu of the galley vanishes, the galleries are still there but I cannot edit them nor create new one's. Deactivate all my plug-ins one by one, no change. Post it here, no answer yet. I do have to upload and install galleries, so I start looking for an alternative. Download and install Image Gallery with Slideshow by Anblik and lo and behold, the menu reappears and is functional. Disable the Image Gallery with Slideshow, menu disappears again, so enable it again..
    Load pictures, works fine save NO thumbnails and No apparent way of creating any. Tries all of the above, does not work, HELP.
    Indeed an option to revert to the previous version would be great.
    Hopefully this is resolved soon, I have to upload galleries of a show, it IS urgent.

    Hello again:
    In my case it seems to be Flash related, or something. When I want to upload pictures, I select them and then click "upload". The only thing which happens is that the progress bar at the bottom is added. I then have to click the "upload" button again and things start moving. Sometimes it stops for quite some time but in the end all the pictures are uploaded. Then it shifts to the non-Flash page (as it always did) and adds the progress bar on the bottom (it used to be floating in 1.8.1 now it sits at the bottom) and there it stops. I am pretty sure if it could start it from there that it would work. Now it just sits there, apparently forever.
    I hope this sheds some light on where the problem could be.
    I really wish I could revert for the moment.
    Hoping on a [very] swift solution
    It does not work with the non-Flash upload neither.

    Same problem here. I have the latest version of both wordpress and the plugin.

    The issue seems to be the path. The thumbnails are not being put into the directory for the thumbnails. The thumbnails are created but the path is leading to a directory with no images.

    Okay, that would make sense to me.

    That's why:
    when I changed the settings in the /lib/gd.thumbnail.inc.php
    // @ini_set('memory_limit', '128M');
    @ini_set('memory_limit', '128M');
    the post preview of the pics didn't work anymore.. I can't remember if thumbnail creating did work lol, but the missing post preview pics were reason enough to revert the changes... so I changed it back to
    // @ini_set('memory_limit', '128M');
    -> post previews are now shown as they should, but the thumbs are not created after upload...

    Now I downgraded ngg back to 1.7.4 (the last working version before upgrading of wp and ngg) but the problem still resists. The thumbnails are not being created. After successful uploading the pics the progress bar of the thumbnail creation runs up to 100% and then everything stops .. the popup remains and no thumbs....

    Ah.. and now I'm even not able to create the thumbs manually at the gallery's management page anymore. So.. I think right now I have to create thumbs "at home" and upload them afterwards.

    And I really wonder about the "able to create a 800x600px picture" message in the gallery's dashboard's plugin-check.

    Is it possible that there are more than one problems? E.g. path AND permission problems and/or flash probs?

    I've already spend a lot of time to find the mistake and tried to fix it but now I'm helpless.

    Any advice please... thanks

    I have the same problem : when I upload images (WP 3.2.1 and NGG 1.8.2), some images do not have thumbnail. I've tried to download them again, to create the thumbnails by hand but nothing's working.

    Hope a fix will come soon, Alex Rabe is doing such a great job!

    I found that if you upload pics one at a time you get thumbnail. Time-consuming but better than no thumbnail!

    I will try tomorrow...

    Niall, did you do the gallery check at the gallery's dashboard? Do you also get a limited size result e.g. 800 x 600 like me? My other (working) blogs show a limit set to about 3xxx x 2xxx (same provider but older wp/ngg versions). And I use to upload pics that I have resized to 800x600 px before upload... and the thumbs should be 100x100...

    Sounds like a memory setting prob?! Don't know....

    Good night to everybody ;)

    OK, now I am completely lost and saved. As I urgently needed a gallery and the NGG did not work, I started looking for an alternative. None really were to my liking. I installed cube3D. It did not show up but my menu of the NGG showed up again. I checked one of my galleries to which I could not generate the thumbnails. This gallery has two pages, on page one I tried before to generate or re-generate the thumbnails. Now, as by magic they were showing. Page two was still devoid of thumbnails. I tried the re-generate thing. The progress bar (floating again) showed and went through its thing. I had to close the window when finished and no thumbnails were showing. I clicked update and wow there they all were!! Now i created a new gallery and the thumbnails were generated at once, no problem.
    Right now thus it works as it should, hope it continues until the fix is there.
    I just want to share this as it is worth a try and could provide some clues as to the cause.
    Good luck

    My gallerycheck show no issues at all, even when it did not generate the thumbnails .

    Hi again ;)

    Now I checked if a thumbnail is created when uploading only one image: No.
    I also upgraded back from 1.7.4 to 1.8.2: no changes, it still doesn't work.

    One thing changed since yesterday (without doing anything oO): The plugin Check says, that NO image could be created because the limit is to low...

    So I changed the settings in the /lib/gd.thumbnail.inc.php to
    // @ini_set('memory_limit', '128M');
    @ini_set('memory_limit', '64M');
    But this even doesn't solve my problem. Hm...

    My server settings:
    Betriebssystem : Linux (32 Bit)
    Server : Apache
    Speicherverbrauch : 30.56 MByte
    MySQL Version : 5.0.51a-24+lenny5-log

    I'm not able to find a reason in this? Anybody else perhaps?
    It's exactly the same provider I use for my other blogs and only this one isn't working...

    Edit: I forgot to mention that after setting the memory limit in the gd.thumbnail.inc.php to 64 or 128 also the post preview of the pics doesn't work, so I switched it back.

    The plugin can't raise the memory limit if it's limited by the server (= your hoster). Again please read & understand this :

    Every new WordPress Version & every new plugin require more memory, also the thumbnail creation works a long time, you could hit the limit during the next upgrade.

    See also this post : http://alexrabe.de/2008/03/21/11-3/

    You can see a hoster can limit the memory without a chance for my plugin to recognize it.

    Hmmm, well, I thought a memory_limit of 50M would be enough but, apparently it wasn't. I just upped it to 120M and thumbnails are working now.

    Posted 5 years ago #

    Thanks for the answer - that helps me to save time for now. Sorry that I myself didn't find your explanation of the limit thing while searching for a solution. Of course I had a look at the plugin's page but.. I just didn't find it.

    So I hope that my hoster will increase the memory limit. Waiting now for an answer. If not, I fear that I'll have to look for another - less memory using - solution.. or change the hoster *sigh*

    I really appreciate the plugin and your consistent work and revision of it, Alex. This is the first time I wasn't able to fix a problem so I asked - thanks for your advice ;)

    Tried the memory test & it worked ok.

    Tried uploading pictures again & it worked fine.

    No idea what's changed - maybe my provider's given me more memory or maybe I was doing something wrong before?

    Thanks for your help Alex & everybody else :)

    Sorry for my ignorance

    I have upped my memory, both bandwidth and quota to 1GB and I am still not able to get thumbs

    What memory am I looking for? I have a resellers account with hostgator but cannot see any other memory option.

  27. batfan
    Posted 5 years ago #

    You need to up the PHP memory, in your php.ini file. For example, my thumbnails are working with 120MB. This is the line I added to my php.ini file:

    memory_limit = 120M

  28. DaveMarkel
    Posted 5 years ago #

    Thanks I got that set to 500 m and still no thumbs

    The thumbnails are not being created in the thumbnail directory. The path seems correct but there are no files in that folder.

    Even after setting the memory limit to 1gb they still give a memory error.

    Bye Bye plugin onto something less flaky

    Well all I can say is this: ever since I installed and activated the Cube3D plugin, everything works fine with NGG, uploads without a problem and generates the thumbnails without a problem. In fact, I have full functionality in NGG.
    This is not machine or ISP related as I work on different machines with different ISP's. One thing they all have in common is the OS: Windows7. I work even with both IE and Firefox, no problem. I did NOT use the Cube3D plug as I prefer NGG because it does not crop the thumb not even when they are portrait!
    This might be a dirty solution but it works and I am quite happy with it pending an upgrade and/or fix of NGG.
    My upload limit sits at 30 MB by the way and with this configuration I uploaded 37 pictures in one batch and the thumbnails were generated ! The only difference I see is that the progress bar was docked at the bottom (after the upgrade to 1.8.2) and is now floating (again as it used with 1.8.1).
