[closed] cannot create a working network sub-directory with 3.0.2 (6 posts)

I have tried fresh installs of wordpress 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 on both Yahoo and DreamHost servers. Both will install and run the main blog o.k. However, neither will run a network sub-directory site. They will both allow me to create one that shows up in the SuperAdmin Site menu where I can edit its options. However, when I try to go to any page in the network sub-directory site, I get a "page not found" error on both servers.

So my question is this has anyone successfully completed a clean install of wordpress 3.0.2 on Yahoo or DreamHost with working network sub-directory sites?

I have followed the instructions at http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network many times on both servers to no avail.

My main blog site is http://www.teaching-tech.net/
    network sub-directory site is http://www.teaching-tech.net/ia

I have also been in contact with DreamHost and they are aware of the (mixed code)problem described here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/fatal-error-for-function-get_post_format?replies=10#post-1815726

DreamHost has checked Mod-Rewrite and claim everything is good on their end.

When I use default permalinks my sub-directory site displays the main site. When I use any other permalinks, all I get when trying to go to the sub-directory site is a 'page can not be found' error.

My .htaccess file is exactly the same as the one listed for subfolders on http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network and this is exactly the same as what wordpress itself had me copy to the .htaccess file.

wordpress is not in any folder it is installed in root of site

Any help would be much appreciated

  2. Yahoo does not allow htaccess files (last I heard, which was yesterday) so no, this will not work on that host.

It does work on Dreamhost, but gets picky sometimes.

Make sure the file is .htaccess - note the dot in front, no extension.

I have also been in contact with DreamHost and they are aware of the (mixed code)problem

they've been aware of it since June, when I told them about it. they have yet to do anything about it though.

you could try another host where they have been far less issues.

Thank you for your help and insight. Could you please recomend a host that multi-site sub-directories will work on?

  4. Generally we don't do web host recommendations here, since it just becomes an ad festival.

http://wordpress.org/hosting/ has a few that WP recommends. If you look around for hosting, you can always ask if they permit .htaccess files and WordPress multisite.

Hi not sure if I have the exact problem listed here!
But I am having trouble installing WPMU with sub-directories!

    I have setup sub-domains fine!
But I have started my new site http://pokerxtra.com and would like the sub-directories working!

http://pokerxtra.com/pkr/ seems to have a broken theme, but that is not the problem, I dont know what I have done wrong, can somebody please help me and point me in the right direction :)

Tried fresh installs with no plugins or themes installed, but still get the same issue!

cannot even loginto subdirectory sites :(

    Realy fustrating!
could do a subdomain option, but that is not what I want!

I assume the rewite works as I can semmi access this page http://pokerxtra.com/pkr/2010/12/04/hello-world/
