Support » Fixing WordPress » Cannot change page location on website

  • I have a page which was located as:

    http://www.example.com/directory/page.html

However, I want to get rid of directory, so that is is now only:

    http://www.example.com/page.html

If I read instructions correctly it’s as simple as changing the permalink, which will then modify all pages within the website. However, that doesn’t seem to be happening.

While, it’s creating new pages correctly, it’s not changing any of the old pages for some reason.

Is that not the correct way to change older pages, or is it correct. But, there’s something wrong with the site?

Using Cache Box Pro theme with WP 4.2.2, and both are updated to the latest version.

    Thanks!!

    Robert

  • That usually does the trick if you clear the cache (if you have one).

The other thing I can think of that could be messing you up is if you created a custom menu (Appearance => Menus) and didn’t change it after changing the permalink structure. It’s possible you have links to the old permalinks with “directory” in there.

    Hmmm….

Well, I did dabble with the idea of a custom menu. But, I only had it active for a few minutes, before deciding to go back to the standard menu for what I needed, and I deleted the one I created. Just double checked, and it’s no longer there.

Neither I, nor the person who set the site up immediately, installed a cache plug-in, so that’s not it, and I just emptied my browser cache to make sure that wasn’t it. (which it wasn’t).

The only other thing I can think of is to check your .htaccess file to make sure there’s nothing in there causing problems. That could certainly affect what you see in the address bar of your browser and 404’s for pages, but it shouldn’t affect what’s saved to the database for the permalinks.

You can try saving your permalinks again. I know you probably did that when you changed the format, though. I have had to re-save permalinks occasionally when moving a site, and it has fixed some things even when it showed the permalink structure was correct.
