Support » Plugin: UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin » Cannot backup when using DNS ‘preview’ service

My web host recently discontinued support for temporary URLs, so all the websites I am developing must now utilize a ‘website preview’ service, which provides a sort of ‘proxy’ URL for the domain, visible only to those with access to the URL. Hosts.cx is one example: https://hosts.cx/

But upon utilizing this service to access my websites, it seems UpDraft no longer works. Instead, a typical backup on even a very small site stalls out, often for hours or indefinitely, without ever completing the backup. Nor does it work when saving backups only locally (as opposed to remote storage). I presume the problem lies with the ‘website preview’ DNS proxy arrangement.

I’ve tried deleting UpDraft and using a fresh installation, but even this did not help.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi,

To help us find out the cause of the issue, please send us a copy of the latest full backup log. This can be found in the UpdraftPlus Existing Backups tab.
Please use an online service such as Dropbox or Pastebin, and post the link here.

    Regards,

    Thanks for the support!

Unfortunately, when I click on “Download most recently modified log file,” the dialog window states: “Loading log file … 502 (UpdraftPlus: could not parse the JSON)”.

But I was able to access the logs via cPanel; here’s a link to the latest successful full backup log.

Keep in mind that any references in the logs to “example.com” are in fact preview URLs being ‘proxied’ by Hosts.cx; the development site in question is not public and can be accessed only by this preview link provided by Hosts.cx. The DNS records still point to the previous host and site, which is live and slated to be replaced by this new site.

I should also mention that until 4 days ago, this development site was in fact able to make complete backups stored locally; backups began stalling/failing yesterday.

    Thanks again!

    Hi,

“502 (UpdraftPlus: could not parse the JSON)”
The usual cause of the error you are getting is a timeout in PHP-FPM. Can you consult your web hosting company to check if that is the case, and what they suggest? (What is the timeout? The default is 60 seconds in PHP-FPM; so the server would have to be hugely overloaded for that… so I suspect there is more to it, but the server admin is the person with the access to find out).

Also, try to reduce the backup archive split size. This will split the backup into smaller, more manageable files.

To do this, open the ‘expert settings’ section of the UpdraftPlus Settings tab, and find the ‘split backups every’ option. Set this to 25Mb save your settings and run a new process.
