    Hi,

I love this plugin because it’s so straightforward, and I’m really grateful to its developers and everyone who helps to maintain it. Recently, I was confronted with a surprising issue…

All of a sudden – since the last update? – I haven’t been able to add members manually anymore. One member paid; I refunded her after failing several times to add her manually. Rolling back to the previous version of the plugin did not help either.

This is what I do to manually add a member (as I have done many times in the past): Go to MEMBERS -> ADD NEW MEMBER -> fill in the required fields (username, email, password, level) -> click ADD MEMBER -> and then (= this is the problem) nothing happens.

The only change I made lately to my general server settings was to run cron jobs through the server itself, but that was four months ago and I cannot imagine it interfering with the plugin’s functionality. The cron jobs run fine, I just checked it.

Does anyone have any similar experience?
    Any suggestions?

    Things I tried:
I deactivated my caching plugins and tried again, but there was no change.

My very unprofessional workaround: I solved the issue for the specific user who asked me to obtain a membership by using an old, expired account and changing it for her use, i.e. by giving it her the email address and a new password and finally re-activating it.

Thank you for reaching out to us. Please first enable debug mode. The following can help you.

    https://simple-membership-plugin.com/enable-debug-logging/

Then add a test member manually. Once this is done, check the log files for any information.

If the above does not help, then carry out the following troubleshooting steps.

Let me know how you go.

    Kind regards.

    Hi mbrsolution,

Thank you for your quick response.

    Just to follow up:

    • Debug mode was already enabled. The only log entry is from a) one user who successfully renewed her subscription earlier this morning (not a new member but a renewal only!!) and b) my admittedly “unprofessional workaround” to add another user later this morning (as described above). None of my later actions – my various attempts to add a new member via the normal process – shows in the debug file.
    • Plugins: I deactivated all plugins except for the membership plugin and tried to add a new member again. Still no result – clicking the “Add New Member” button has no effect and again, no entries appear in the debug log. I’ve since reactivated all plugins.
    • WordPress Theme: No changes made. I’m using a child theme of Twenty Twenty-Three, which only contains some minor CSS adjustments. So I did not touch that.
    • Website Status (Tools): Everything looks good. The only note is regarding PHP version 8.1.32, but I don’t believe that’s related to the issue. WordPress version is 6.8.2.
    • Server Check: Everything is running smoothly – bandwidth and storage are well within limits.

Thanks again for your help — I appreciate any further suggestions you might have!

    Best regards,

I just carried out a test in my dev site. I followed the steps you mentioned above and it works for me. Of course I made sure I added a new member and an email address that does not already exist in the database. I also set the account status to active. This test was for a free membership level.

You might like to try the following, disable and delete the plugin. Then install a fresh new copy and activate it. You will not loose any configuration or members that already exist. This sometimes works. Then carry out another test.

    Let me know what happens.

    Kind regards.

    Hi mbrsolution,

Thank you very much for your helpful feedback and response – I really appreciate your support.

You’re absolutely right, reinstalling the plugin would be the next logical step. However, I’m currently in the process of re-evaluating my overall business strategy and considering some structural changes. This includes a possible shift away from offering content behind a paywall in the long term, which might also affect the way I handle payments.

For that reason, I’m a bit hesitant to dive deeper into troubleshooting right now – but I truly appreciate your guidance and the time you took to reply.

Thanks again and all the best,
    Karin

When you’re manually adding member details and clicking the submit button, do you see any field showing an error? Try scrolling up to check if there’s a message or validation error that might not be immediately visible. Sometimes a required field or error message can be missed if it’s further up on the form.

    Hi wp.insider,

Thank you for your reply. My answer: No error message. The button “Add new member” is just not reacting at all.

    Just to inform you:

    • I did add members in the past. I do know about error messages, missing email etc., in this process; no error message in my case.
    • If I try to add a new member and omit the email for example, the error messages show. Field validation works correctly.
    • I also can add regular WP users.

    Regards, Karin
