  • Who was the host (server) for your site?

You may be able to get the database and website files as a backup from that company.

You could then use the database and files to build out a new website using your old site’s materials but under a new website name (domain name).

But without a domain name that points to an actual server hosting your site, you will not be able to view the site – the domain name is an essential part to being able to view and access a website.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was hosting my site with Zyma.

I understand that the website cannot be viewed on the internet as the URL is simply pointing to a new site now (not mine!)

But can I still login to WordPress and see the pages that I have written, designed and built?

I am really worried that i cannot access all the work I have done, just because i lost my URL. I was hoping that i could buy a new URL, and apply that to my old site that i built in WordPress (with all my old pages, photos, email capture etc still available)

Unfortunately no you can’t simply login to the site until you have the following:
    1) A domain name
    2) A server with the database and WordPress/other site files (uploads)
    3) Have the domain name pointed at the server

Then you will need to update your WordPress site to use the new domain name for it to work “correctly”.

See for more information about how to do this.

Follow-up: Get a backup of your old site from your host just to be safe. Then get a new domain name and start following the directions as explained here: You will be able to get your site back – just at a new domain.

Domain and hosting are two different things. If your hosting account is still active you can log into your hosting account and view the website by ip address after a few changes in the database.

If your domain and hosting expired, your site is no longer being hosted and will not be accessible. You should call your hosting provider and see if they have a backup.

If your site is gone, you can still copy the images and content from an older snapshot here*/

    Thank you both for replies.

My URL Domain has been purchased by someone else – so thats gone (they are just pointing my URL to a random Pinterest page by a CV writing company).

Why would they take my low key URL that I have had for 8 years and just use it for that!?

But my hosting with Zyma is still live and active, with my WordPress database still hosted there.

I have emailed Zyma to explain the situation and asked how they could help me repoint the site to a new URL (when i purchase one!)

    Thanks for help again,
