Support » Plugin: Wordfence Security - Firewall & Malware Scan » Cannot Access Wordfence at all After Update

  • I have tried un-installing, re-installing, de-activating, re-activating and when I click on Wordfence after this latest update, nothing comes up. It just gives me the error of “the page isn’t working”. This is an issue that needs resolved now.

    Hi,

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with the update. Is it only Wordfence pages that won’t display at all, or is it more than just Wordfence pages?

Also, do you know where to find the site’s error logs? In most cases, an error that stops a page from being visible should provide more details in the error log, unless the host has disabled them. They’re usually named php_errors.log or error_log, and are often in the site’s main directory, with possibly another one in wp-admin/. If you can post the errors here, that can help narrow down the issue.

If the site is running on a Windows server, it’s possible the “thread stack size” is too low. The necessary amount can vary, depending on what else is installed on the site, but we have details on how to increase the amount here:
    https://docs.wordfence.com/en/I_see_a_%22connection_reset%22_error_message_after_updating

Depending on how the site is hosted, this might be a change that the hosting company would need to make.

Nothing is being reported to the error log when I click on Wordfence in the admin area. It is only the Wordfence pages I cannot access. I have been able to access it before this update was made just fine. This site isn’t on a Windows server, it’s on Apache.

    Hi,

When you see the “page isn’t working” message, does it also say that it is a HTTP 500 error below that, or is there anything else in the message?

I don’t think we have had other reports of this, so it’s likely to be a conflict with another plugin, the theme, or something to do with the server’s configuration.

It’s unusual that there is nothing in the error logs in this case, though it’s possible the host has disabled them. If that’s a possibility, you can temporarily set up wp-config.php to create a log file in wp-content/debug.log:

Another option to help find the cause is to temporarily disable other plugins and switch to a common theme like ‘twentysixteen’, and see if the error still occurs.

Yes, I do get a HTTP ERROR 500 message. The theme we are using is Mystile and the plugins we are using are: Easy SMTP, Easy WP Meta Description, Google Analytics Dashboard for WP, Regenerate Thumbnails, Simple History, WooCommerce, WooCommerce Authorize.net DPM Gateway, WooCommerce Google Analytics Integration, WooCommerce Google Product Feed, WooCommerce Helper, Wordfence Security, WP Meta SEO, Select WP Original Media Path, Yoast SEO.

We have never seen this issue before the update. As far as switching to another theme, that is out of the question for this client.

Ok, since you are getting a ‘500’ error, there should be something in the logs, so the best option is to try getting WP’s error log settings to work, so you can see the message — it might show a message from a different plugin, or it might be from Wordfence, but usually it should give a specific file and line number, unless it’s a memory issue or timeout, which would have a different message.

If you have a test site where you can install the same theme and plugins, that could also help narrow down the cause. I understand that it’s not always possible to switch the theme, even just for a few minutes for testing.
