  • I know WP was originally made as a blogging system but I want to create something similar to a dating site (not a dating site though) with all the usual features such as user profiles, search by location and criteria, IM, group events etc. Now, Im hopeless at the tech side of things but Ive been doing some research and am getting conflicting advice. From what I can gather, I need plenty of “computation power”, (whatever that means) because a large community site will have a lot of data. So I know about scaled hosting, dedicated servers etc, but do you think WP can do a good job of a high traffic community site? Or would I be better off using Drupal or Joomla (again, not sure what they are, apart from CMS’s).

Forum Moderator used WordPress (Multisite, to be precise) and it has millions of sites with, I assume, traffic in the order of tens of millions per day.

Hi Esmi. I know nothing about, only Are there any WP/BP experts out there? I’ve been told WP/BP can work well for a large community site, but then I’m told the opposite. I have yet to come across a high traffic, large WP/BP community site so am not sure if I should use Drupal etc?

Yes, WP/BP is capable of handling high traffic sites.

Thankyou 🙂 If anyone passes through this thread and has some examples I could look at – Id be grateful.

Community sites that is – not a blog. Community sites have a whole load of data so would love to see real examples. Thankyou (I wont hold my breath as I’ve looked everywhere)…

    Have you looked here?

A good part of this has to do with the hosting you use…

Yes wordpress should be able to handle a large community site , Even drupal with more than a few plugins installed needs caching and optimizations.

With proper caching and server stack you should be able to scale quite well. And as you grow you can scale horizontally over multiple server and node balancers etc.

Do make sure you go with proper hosting , preferable managed if you are not a expert on server stuff.

Thanks guys. Im going with Hostgator because I love their customer service and they do scalable hosting. I think eventually I will build my site from the ground up but for now I’m going to build it in WP/BP!! 🙂
