It looks like on every refresh of the WordPress Admin Dashboard, Wordfence invokes count_users(). This slows the loading of our backend, sometimes by 5-10 seconds.

Can we remove that use of count_users()? If yes, how?

It does not appear to be doing anything visible on the page. So perhaps it is superfluous?

    Yes that’s correct.

The solution was for us to uncheck the Wordfence > All Options > “Enable activity report widget on the WordPress dashboard”.

That widget appears to call count_users().

Thanks for the help. We’re all set.
