Can users add themselves to role with a code? (or something similar)

I’m trying to set up role/group discounts. There would be multiple roles/groups each with potentially 1000’s of role/group members.

I need a way for customers to be added to roles/groups without requiring a manual effort on our part in the backend.

Additionally, because these groups will be getting discounts, I can’t give them a list to choose from, (or everyone will).

I need to provide some way for select customers to verify they are part of this/a particular role/group, like with a coupon code that gives them access.

Is this possible?

(The reason I’m doing this instead of just giving out coupon codes, is because these members need to be able to use coupons on single items and also on subscriptions, currently the subscription coupon plugins require a separate code that is not valid on regular products, and regular codes are not valid on subscription products, so I’m looking into setting a user discount level, but I don’t want to manage 1000’s of users manually. )
