    Hi There!

First thanks for a great plugin!

I was wondering if the following functionality is somewhere possible and I missed it: I’m looking for something similar to the URL/slug monitor for pages: Whenever page’s link is updated, a redirect is being created, from its previous URL to the new updated one (awesome feature!). Similarly, is there a place to set that a redirection to the front-page (/) will be created when a page is being DELETED (not updated)?
So next time someone will hit example.com/deleted-page they will be redirected to example.com/ .

    Thanks, Chen.

You can use the monitoring feature to create disabled redirects when something is deleted. You will then need to go and fill in the details.

I would not advise redirecting to your home page as it serves no purpose. The best is to redirect to a replacement page, the next best is to return a 410 error.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I don’t know what you mean by “create disabled redirects when something is deleted”. Is this an automated process happening every time a post is deleted? Where can I figure it? I do have checks on the URL monitor under the options page, for pages/posts. But I didn’t see anything happens/being created when a page is being deleted. Am I missing anything?

Hi again. I’d really be glad to know where to find an automatically-created and disabled redirect, after a page/post has been deleted. I can’t seem to find such a disabled redirect when I delete a page, for example, and my monitor is on for Page post type, of course.

    Thanks!

The support site contains all the information:

    https://redirection.me/support/options/

Monitoring trashed items is an option there.

Thank you, I saw that page.

Unfortunately, that’s the problem I’m having and the reason I wrote this support/request post: I have my monitor checked and turned on, I’m deleting posts, but no disabled redirects are created. 🙁

According to the support page, under the headline “URL Monitoring“: Redirection can monitor for URLs changes to posts, pages, and custom post types, and auto-create a redirect from the old post URL to the new post URL.
It can also be configured for deleted posts, although these will be auto created as disabled redirects and you will need to fill in the target URL and then enable.”

So I guess either I’m missing the configuration for deleted posts, or that it might not work simply by checking the “Monitor changes to pages”?

(Just to be clear I’m seeing all other redirections for URL changes, and I’ve looked in every Redirection group, as well).

    Thanks, Chen.

You need to enable the ‘Monitor changes to trash’ option

I’m having the exact same problem and I have ‘Monitor Changes to Trash’ ticked. No disabled redirects are being created when I delete anything from the Trash.

    Hi @redkite
I’m not the plugin author, but from I understand, what you are describing is not the expected behavior. Rather, when you have the option ‘Monitor Changes to Trash’ ticked, items that are monitored, once they are deleted (aka moved to trash), a disabled redirect is automatically created for them. So this is NOT for generally items that are permanently deleted from the trash.

    Hope I helped, good luck!

Also, thanks @johnny5 , I finally got it worked as I wanted.
