Hello. I have a client with some unique needs so I’m picking up extensions and custom coding various things.

They sell items in batches. So the same product will be paid for then when the current batch is complete they are shipped out. Repeat. I don’t want to muddy it up using variations, and don’t want to create a new product every time.

Not finding much in the way of “Batch Management”.

I’m considering using SKU’s and just changing them on the product before sales for the next batch begins.

    So for example: SA800-2019-Q1
Would reference the batch in quarter 1 of 2019, and the next batch SKU would be changed to SA800-2019-Q2 , for quarter 2.

This is entirely for tracking, organizational purposes. Just not sure if SKU’s are intended to be used in this manner? Or even can?

    Thanks!

  • You could have a look at WC Fields Factory. It will allow you to create a “Batch No.” field. This would allow you to keep your SKUs the same.

Also “Advanced Custom Fields” could be worth a look.

@lorro thanks for putting WC Fields Factory on my radar, was unaware of it. I typically use ACF actually but didn’t consider that since I need this meta data to be a apart of the product info. Hopefully something that will be on the orders page, emails, and maybe even part of WC’s sorting options? Ill dig deeper. Thanks

WCFF fields propagate through cart, checkout, thank-you, orders and emails, though not to WC sorting options, some code will be needed for that.

    Hi @szyam,

Looks like you’ve got this sorted with @lorro’s help.

I’ll go ahead and mark this thread as resolved.

Thanks again @lorro I appreciate your help. I’d say that my question about using “sku” numbers for the functionality I wanted was not answered. But some interesting alternative ideas were suggested. I’d still like to know how far I can take sku’s and to what other benefits they might provide. But, I’m good for the moment. Thanks.
