• i have 1and1 as a host and i installed in /wordpress, checked the wp-config.php settings, many times. Tried to move the index.php to the root directory and change the file path using a text editor (read that someplace here). Didnt work. I used an FTP client to delete everything and went into the mySQL and dropped all the files, and reinstalled everything. twice. then re-downloaded wordpress and deleted everything again and reinstalled it….

I can sign into the dashboard- cafelifevancouver.com/wordpress/wp-admin
and i can sign into the dashboard but thats all. the page wont load. i tried clicking the link at the top of the dashboard (assuming that will take me to the page) nothing

I got it to load once then tried to install another theme and i think i messed things up, but that was several erases and installs ago.

not sure what else i can do…

i am new at this, please, laymen instructions.

    Hi wouldbeblogger,

Tried to move the index.php to the root directory and change the file path using a text editor (read that someplace here).

    Maybe here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

    try:
    – renaming or deleting the .htaccess file by using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. If you delete it make a backup first.

    – checking if all permissions are correct

Do you have access to your servers error logs?

Have you tried if it works in the root of your site?

I have tried to install it dir to the root of my site, no difference. tried to install it twice. I allowed my ftp client to show all file types and i dont see a .htaccess. Is that a problem?

working on permissions and error logs.

this is what i get when i type in the URL cafelifevancouver.com/wordpress

    Error 404 – Not found

Your browser can’t find the document corresponding to the URL you typed in.

and when i type in cafelifevancouver.com

    Error 403 – Forbidden

You tried to access a document for which you don’t have privileges.

I downloaded JETPACK 1.8 yesterday. After that I could not open the dashboard anymore(that is, I cannot log into my admin site). Please assist.

The website encountered an error while retrieving http://www.edwardsmaths.com/wp-admin/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

This is the message I am receiving when I try to log in.

    Please assist.

I used the mac text editor to create a .htaccess file and uploaded it to /wordpress , the same place where the index.php is.

now when I go and try to load the webpage cafelifevancouver.com/wordpress I get the following error (remember 1and1 hosting):

Error 500 – Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

    thoughts? i guess something changed

I have tried to install it dir to the root of my site, no difference.

Ask your host if there’s something wrong on their end.

Did you check the permissions or server error logs?

    Thread Starter wouldbeblogger

    (@wouldbeblogger)

I set the permissions to 755.
I dont think I can check the error logs:

from 1and1 help FAQ: Since we don’t provide access to Apache error logs on shared hosting packages for technical reasons, you can create your own error logs for debugging PHP Scripts.

I am open to starting fresh with this whole thing. i have nothing into the site. it has never worked. I have tried to start over several times? is there something that i am doing wrong?

should i delete my database and remake that as well as deleting the files off the server and dropping all of the mySLQ files? keep in mind I am very new with these things

Thanks for the feedback so far

i fixed it. I was missing some files. I had to do a directory by directory file check to make sure they were all there. I dont know why buy filezilla didnt transfer all of the files. about 5% of them were there. After about an hour of going through every directory and adding the missing files, the site is up.

    thanks for your help
