Can people charge for plugins?

  • I came across a few plugins that people were charging for. Is this kosher? Isn’t there some wordpress licensing thing that this violates?

By the way, is there like a market place for commercial (i.e. for sale) plugins? If not, why isn’t there one?

Of course, people have a right to charge for their hard work.

The only requirement is that the plugin also be licensed under the GPL, but that doesn’t mean that the plugin has to be free. A plugin can still have a hefty price and be licensed under the GPL.

WP Plugins is definitely the largest and most reputable.

On the GPL licence terms, it says that you can charge to access a copy of the code, but under the GNU licence terms that person who paid can then give access to others for free to use it?

So would this mean if someone charges $10 for a plugin, then Mr C could purchase that, then place on a download site for others to use for FREE?

    Just a thought!

It all depends on the terms and conditions on both parties whether they agree or not to do this. Of course these are the legal ways to do it with mutual respect. However, there are tons of illegal ways to obtain it as well..
