Support » Plugin: Wordfence Security - Firewall & Malware Scan » Can not be installed without sending at least one email

  • During setup process one is forced to enter an email adress and the plugin sends at least one email.

There is no way to circumvent this data harvesting – this renders any plugin useless. Do not install.

Thanks for reaching out. I completely understand your concern about privacy. It’s important to us as well. However, I think you missed what the email is for.
If you looked at the popup closer you would have seen that the email is used to send alerts to you about your site’s security issues. If your security plugin doesn’t have a way to email you and you aren’t getting any alerts it isn’t much of a help, is it?

The email, as I said, is used for your site to send you alerts. Wordfence uses the wp_mail functionality built into WordPress. That’s the same functionality that sends new users an activation email and password resets. Asking for your email address ensures that your site (not ours) has a way to contact you about your scan results and security problems. The email is never sent to us unless you select the option to receive notifications about new security posts we do on our blog. Even then, we never sell or give away your email address to others. And, opting in is not set by default for the newsletters. You have to actually click yes or no to receive the Wordfence Security mailing list emails. You can’t continue until you do so there isn’t any sneaky adding you to a list without you knowing. Here’s an actual screenshot showing the screen that you enter it in.

If you have any other questions or comments I hope you’ll reach out so we can clear up any misunderstandings. Additionally our privacy policy can be found here:
