can not access wp-admin nor wp-login – recursive redirection

Hi,

i was tinkering with my site yesterday – no issues – just messing with a little page content and stuff – no upgrades no installations of any plugins. Today, I can not sign in to the wp-admin panels and I can not get the login screen either.

Its not a browser issue – its happening on multiple machines/browsers. This is what happens whenever i try to go to wp-admin or wp-login.php…

Firefox: Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

Safari: When i go to the wp-admin URL, its immediately replaced with http://troop39wordpress.tomkins.net/wp-admin/?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Ftroop39wordpress.tomkins.net%2Fwp-admin%2F ……

The pages are being delivered correctly when browsing the site however I notice that the link to the login page is not to wp-login.php but just to the URL of the currently displayed page.

I reapplied the latest.tar.gz over the top of the directory and the issue persists. I do not have a .htaccess file – not sure if that is an issue. What would cause these pages to redirect in this way?
