Support » Plugin: Contact Form 7 » Can no longer send emails as marked as spam

Recently the contact form has stopped working. It shows the orange error which means the email is marked as spam. The domain’s email is with Office 365. I’m using the Office 365 address as the from and to and no custom smtp options. I also tried using an SMTP plugin but I can’t get passed the “marked as spam” error.

I installed the WP Forms plugin, put in the same settings (no custom SMTP), and it works fine straight away, so this doesn’t seem to be a fault with a third party. SPF records have been setup for a long time, since we used to host our own email.

So there must be something in the new version of Contact Form 7 that is marking the email as spam before it even gets to the sending stage. Is there any way to fix this, because I really don’t want to have to replace all my contact forms with a new plugin. There are 15 forms on this website alone. I’ve been using Contact Form 7 for over a decade and much prefer the interface to other contact plugins out there.

I checked the FAQ previously but missed the part about Flamingo needing to be installed.

    I get this:

    your-message:
Testing contact form with new subject containing language and using BEE email as from address. Please confirm receipt.

Spam log: Blacklisted words are used.

    Please advise.

Spam log: Blacklisted words are used.

It says Comment Blacklist has worked. Check your blacklist setting.

    I had:

    http
    .com

in my comment blacklist. This was set to blacklist just the contents of a comment box, not the email address of the recipient.

I’ve removed these completely. Resent the message and now it’s still being classed as spam, but there is no reason given in the status box.

now it’s still being classed as spam

How do you know it is classed as spam?

It’s in the spam list of Inbound Messages.

The status box has Spam checked and the submitted date. But there is no message or indication of why it’s been marked as spam.

I see. What other plugins and theme do you use on the site?

    Hi,

I am having the same issue.
It is not a plugin clash when I delete the reCAPTCHA V3 keys the form works correctly and this is the same on 4 of my websites.

Is there a problem with reCAPTCHA and Contact form 7?

I’m just worried that it’s a security risk to publicly publish the plugins I run. My site gets a lot of attacks on a daily basis. Can you advise on whether it’s okay to post them here or not?

    Many thanks

In the first place you shouldn’t use such unsafe plugins that you have to be worried about just posting their names in a public space.

I consulted with some experts on the security side of WordPress and they allayed my fears about publishing this list. I guess I’m just naturally cautious.

Try switching theme to the default one (Twenty Nineteen or Twenty Seventeen) and deactivating all the plugins excluding Contact Form 7, Flamingo, and Yoast SEO, then test it again.

I’m not aware that any of these are unsafe.

You seem to be using a lot of plugins and theme that are hosted outside of WordPress.org. I don’t say all of them are unsafe, but some of them are not very secure. Using plugins and themes that WordPress.org hosts is advised if you are interested in the safety of your websites.

I downgraded the plugin to version 5.05 and everything works perfectly again. As far as I am aware, there are no security updates since then?

I’m in the middle of setting up a staging site so I can test with the latest version to try to find where the conflict is.
