• I just updated a couple a months ago all my 8 wordpress sites, WP version and all plugins. Grueling/ tedious, but I understand.

    Then just month later, come the Wordfece alerts WP has a new version.

    Is there any harm in skipping a few versions, and if not, how many. Personally I would upgrade once a year if it was kosher. There is nothing in the WP or plug ins I desperately need today… Trust me.

    With Mac OS, I wait 8 months after a new OS to update for bug issues. Thanks.

  • I usually wait… And I forget, too.

    Hasn’t hurt me and a few times I think it’s saved me some grief.

    I wouldn’t advise being the first to adopt but you probably don’t want to wait too long either.

    A lot of my sites still haven’t been updated to 5.X yet… and we’re three minor versions into that now.

    Thanks Nash;
    I concur, so much tedium if you have 8 WP sites whew.. I would love to know what is the maximum you could safely let it go, and I would put that interval as a repeating event in my calendar

    YOu can update (or not) when ever you want to. Remember that minor revisions do get updated automatically, so that’s one les thing for you to do. The biggest reason for udating is that the majority of updates (apart from the “big” changes of 5.0) are normally security related, so having an older version could leave your sites a little bit more vunerable then they otherwise might be.

    And… what is the maximum you could safely let it go, ?

    How long is a piece of string?

    There’s really no “safe” time after an upgrade because what ever vunerabilities were patched are now really public knowledge, so can be exploited. Sometimes this can happen vert fast, sometimes it may take months, and sometime syou might not get targeted for anything at all.

    As an example… I’ve got customers sites here that haven’t been updated for 3-4 years. They are still running along OK, but they don’t get touched. We’ve also had other sites that have been fully updated on time every time that have been hacked. There’s just no one answer for what you’re asking because there’s just too many variables. The only thing that I’d suggset is to do the updates “as soon as possible for you”.
