I have had a site developed by a mate and he has used a lot of the HTML from wordpress. I just want to check before I pay him for it that its not illegal in anyway.

100% certain? even if he hasnt used all your code just parts of it?

Does he need to credit you in anyway?

  4. WordPress is licensed under the GPL, which basically means that you're free to modify it and use parts of it as you see fit. The only real restriction is that any work you produce which uses the code or parts of it must also be GPL licensed.

For more information on the GPL, see here: http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

He can use any bits he likes.
He does not need to credit WordPress.

He cannot claim that the code is all his though. So he can't put a "This code copyright Mate 2006"

If your mate has said "I'll do you a site for $$" and he has, and has used some WP code to do that then all should be okay.

No he hasnt copyrighted it although he does want credit for design which i said was fine.

Also we have copyright of our company at the bottom of every page but that is for the text involved which was ripped from our old site.

So as far as you can tell its cool?

Sorry to keep asking its just I had 2 mates who wanted to do it the better one used parts of wordpress and the one who did the crappier site said it was illegal.

  8. Perfectly legal. The only concern you will have is if you want to package and distribute the site's software itself. But just use of the software to make your site: no problems.
