Can I use Social Login to only connect registered users to social accounts?
-
I have been using this plugin for years – outstanding work.
However, it provides a privacy issue because it registers users and grabs their name from their social profile (e.g. Facebook) and makes this name their username on my WordPress install. Their linked profile then contains this username in the URL (the BuddyPress standard), and their author link on WordPress has a similar visibility. This profile link is publicly shown on all of the member’s content (e.g. forum posts) etc.
Facebook, for example, requires the user to use their actual name, and even if this plugin derives the WordPress username from their email (not sure if it does this, my email on Facebook is also my username there) the email all too often includes identifying information about the user, including their actual names.
My website is for teachers, and their privacy is critical. Other communities I’m sure have similar concerns. Eliminating user profiles and the member directory defeats the purpose of the community, and limiting access to logged in users is not desirable nor effective at protecting their privacy.
My ideal use for this plugin would be to require users to register via my site first, selecting a username they can choose which shields their privacy. *Thereafter, they can use the plugin to link their new WordPress account to their Facebook account (etc.) for easy login*.
Configuring your plugin to not display on registration page, and only on login page, does not work, since they are automatically registered FROM the login page, if they don’t have an existing account.
How can this plugin be modified or deployed to only allow users who have already registered to login with their social account? (Hope I’ve been clear and the answer isn’t obvious :o)
