• Hi there. I am just trying to get my head around the selling of some of my themes. If I create a theme, and include some functionality, such as a slider that uses a plugin I bought under a GPL licence… can I sell my theme and include the plugin as part of it? Or would that be against the rules of the GPL license?

    Thanks.

  • I would ask the people you paid.

You could but you shouldn’t. It’s unethical.

Put it this way: I purchase your theme from you. Then I put that exact same theme I purchased from you on my website and let everyone download it for free. My site becomes the highest ranking site for your theme on the Internet.

I could do that but that wouldn’t be good for the community or very ethical. Neither should you take someone else’s commercial work and distribute it like that.

Yes you could but it would only damage the community.

You could always be nice and do it one of two ways:

First choice, sell the theme and have big notices saying that users will need to purchase the extra plugins/scripts and give them the links to the real suppliers stores or carts or at least sites. That way you will be selling your product as well as helping the other authors sell their products.

Second choice, contact the authors of the other plugins/scripts and ask what they can do for volume licensing or special deals if you purchase a licence every time you sell a theme. This would be harder as it relies on you to do the right thing every time you make a sale.

As far as this goes it’s less of a legal issue, and more of an ethicla issue. The big point is how would you fele when someone takes your theme and gives it away without you making anything from it?
