Can I clone a site with specific settings and plugins? (13 posts)

I am familiar with WordPress, but I am trying to decide how to proceed. I want to make a lot of sites with blogs on different domains all on the same server. I would like them to be connected if possible with the MS ability.

I currently have a demo site with the settings and plugins all configured exactly the way I want. It takes about 20 minutes to configure each one to be the way I want it to be. Is there a way inside MS where I can clone a site or something similar to save myself those 20 minutes each time?

I will be installing several hundred of them so I would like to be able to upgrade each plugin once rather than a few hundred times each time they are updated.

Is this possible? Thanks in advance for any help.

You can use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/ a free plugin.
Backupbuddy is a paid plugin that also do this.

  3. @abhilol niether one of those will help.

@AliveMedia - yes there are template & replicator plugins that will help you do that.

*Upgrading* your plugins happens once though, for all sites.

  4. Alive Media - http://wpebooks.com/replicator/ is a pay-for plugin that does the replication stuff.

I THINK there's another one, but I can never remember it.

Great, thanks for the responses. Yes, I know I can replicate the sites in a normal WP install using db dumb, etc but was wondering if you could do the same with Multi-site, or if it doesn't work that way.

I guess I am just confused on how you would even be able to replicate a site when it is a totally different method of installing and working with WP. Any input?

Sorry to clarify I am asking if there is a way to do it without a plugin as in mysql dump/restore, etc or not in MS. Thanks very much for the plugin options, especially the replicator one. That is exactly what I am looking to do with a plugin.

You can do it directly in MySQL, but it is more complicated and you'd be redoing everything the plugin authors have already done for you.

  9. Are you trying to copy one of the subsites to a NEW single WP ?

I am merely wondering if it is possible to clone one subsite to another subsite without a plugin using mysql, etc methods. I understand the plugin authors have already done this, but those are paid plugins, not open source.

  11. Sure. Do it manually.

And Open Source means that, once you have the code, you can do what you want. Free as in breathing. Not free as in beer ;) There is nothing NON open source/GPL about charging for a plugin.

Ok thanks. Yeah, true I mis-used that term. I meant open source as in free.

  13. it is possible to clone one subsite to another subsite without a plugin using mysql, etc methods.

if you get a big-ass sql query, sure.

Also, GPL states here, in section 1:

"You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee."

plugin mentioned is GPL. Source is open once you have it. Which means you are free to alter it to your will or use it wherever you like.
