Default behavior of WooCommerce lightbox arrows in which they fade out within three seconds when the mouse is not moved has proved confusing to our visitors, so we would like it changed so that they always stay on, regardless of whether the mouse is moved or not. We would like to know if there is code that can be added to our Child Theme to do so. We don’t use Storefront, but to make it clear what the problem is, you can see the behavior on this page on the Storefront demo:

    https://themes.woocommerce.com/storefront/product/build-your-dslr/#camera-body

To understand what we want to change follow these steps:

    1. Click the magnifier icon on the main image.
    2. The lightbox overlay opens with the main image and caption, and left and right arrows on either side.
    3. Move the mouse into the black area (or off the window). Count slowly to three: “One-one-thousand-two-one-thousand-three…” The arrows disappear.

True, they reappear as soon as the mouse is moved. But we have found that some people find this confusing when they disappear and don’t realize what to do. It may seem very obvious to tech-savvy folks to just start moving the mouse, but apparently it is not so for some people; this is what we are hearing. I’ve gotten user complaints about it. Instead, we would like to keep the arrows on all the time.

If anyone knows what can be done about this please let me know. Please also do not mark this ticket as “Resolved” without asking if it really has been. Thank you.

  • Hello,

Unfortunately, the comparison between your theme and Storefront cannot be made as we don’t know the exact code used in your theme to accomplish the arrows. There are several methods to apply things like this and we cannot say for sure that our theme’s method is the same. That means any solution provided based on Storefront may cause unintended consequences in your theme.

Since we cannot help with this issue I am going to mark this as Resolved. If you have another issue please feel free to open a new post. 🙂

    Thanks!

Hi Phillip — I already asked one of the developers of my theme (SiteOrigin, the theme is Vantage) before posting this and after some conversing back and forth, he said the arrow behavior I describe was the default behavior of WooCommerce — which it must be, because as I said, it’s right there in the Storefront demo. So if you are saying you could give me the code that would keep the arrows on all the time in Storefront, I’ll take all backup precautions prior to trying it out with my theme, and if it causes a conflict, I know how to delete the code from style.css or function.php or whatever is involved. I know how to modify a Child Theme and will accept the code with the caveat that I need to be prepared for a potential conflict if I’m not using Storefront. But I’d like to give it a try.

I really do think it is a problematic feature of WooCommerce. I can’t think of any reason it would be desirable to turn off arrows in a lightbox for numerous images.
