• When I started researching how to implement a directory in WordPress, I saw more than one reviewer who cautioned against using a theme. You’ll be sorry down the road, they said. Themes are for appearance; plugins are for functionality. It didn’t take long for me to realize that those reviewers were right.

I had a problem with Vantage almost immediately. The Review capability wasn’t working, and their customer support told me that nobody else had the problem and they didn’t know where to begin looking. I did all the normal troubleshooting–deactivating plugins and even reinstalling the theme. Since a directory site without reviews is useless to me, I asked for a refund. My requests were ignored until I started a dispute via PayPal, then my money was promptly refunded.

I am now using the Sabai Directory plugin. The learning curve was a bit steeper than with Vantage, but it works great and their support is excellent.

  • Hi singingvegan

Was the theme you were having trouble with by any chance AppThemes Vantage? This is a directory theme sold on the AppThemes website.

The review you just wrote is for our theme SiteOrigin Vantage. We’re a different company.

There are a few things that make me guess you’re using AppTheme’s theme. Firstly our theme doesn’t have the review functionality you mentioned you were having trouble with. Our theme also isn’t a directory theme – it’s a multipurpose business theme. Lastly I don’t see any recent PayPal payment disputes that you might be talking about.

Ack! You’re absolutely right! Is there a way I can remove my review so I can put it in the right place? So sorry!

Don’t worry about it. These things happen. Unfortunately there’s no way for you to remove this review. You can edit it though, so if you have a moment and would like to quickly check out our Vantage and change your review accordingly, it would be very much appreciated 🙂

I’m not sure of a good place where you could leave a review for themes outside WordPress.org. AppThemes do seem to have their own internal review system. It’s possible you could leave your review of their theme there.

Hi singingvegan – just wanted to double check if you’d be willing to modify your review.

If not, would it be possible for an admin like @ipstenu to remove it? I know this isn’t the usual policy, but we’ve confirmed that this review is for a different theme by the same name 🙂

Sorry for the delay. It would be better for the admin to remove the review. I haven’t used your Vantage and can’t give a real review.

Fully understood. Unfortunately it seems like admins wont remove reviews, but perhaps you could just edit the title and content of your review to something more neutral that would be hugely appreciated 🙂

Maybe just editing both to something like “Accidental review”.

I’m sorry. I wish I could edit the title, but I don’t see a way to change it.

It’s crazy that a user mistake can’t be corrected!

Part of the reason I made the mistake was that the AppThemes people locked me out of their system after I got my refund, ensuring that I couldn’t write a review of their Vantage. I was looking for a place to review it and found your theme instead. Grrrr.
