Support » Plugin: Paid Memberships Pro » Buyer BEWARE!

  • Where do I even begin? For starters, they offer a free version, that is useless for a subscription website. So I pony up the fee to upgrade, and guess what? I STILL could not use it for a subscription website. It required another upgrade and another fee to get an add on. I ended up with a bunch of add=ons I never used nor needed.

Then, after they suckered me in, they raised the annual membership fee on me. Now they want 297.00 annually to continue using the product, instead of the 97.00 or 97.00 X 2 I had to pay the first time…

…and get this…..they don’t offer any support for their free version, and since they consolidated their bait and switch method of getting me to buy two upgrades to get the add-on for subscriptions to just a single annual fee of $297 or $597, support was cut off because I’m not a member.

You cannot even view a troubleshooting forum, and there is no page for troubleshooting common errors and such, unless you pony up the 297.00 annual ransom they charge.

Make no mistake, it is a RANSOM, because they load you up with so many add-ons that will not update if you dont pay the ransom, the remnants break your site.

My admin header bar disappears and even though I’m logged in, I’m constantly being required to log in again, and instead of returning me to the page on my site I wanted to edit, it sends me back to the admin homepage. I cannot edit m website from a page now, I must go to pages and do it from the backend because the admin bar is gone and I’m only given one option…to log in again, even though I’m still logged in.

I turned off all plugins and verified it by activating only their base plugin and (((poof))) admin bar is gone, and log in redirect repeats. Of course it cannot be fixed, unless I pony up $297.00 every year.

It’s like installing a virus on your website, that they can charge you whatever they feel like next time you’re up for renewal. I have just one website….I make all of 50.00 / month from it. I will be damned if I’m going to give them 6 months worth of revenue for a plugin that breaks my website, is loaded with bloatware, offer no support whatsoever and is absolutely useless if their ransom demands are not met.

I even tried deleting it and using a different plugin, but the addons are so invasive, images on my website were being blocked after the plugin was removed. I had to reinstall it, to get the images to come back!

I apologize for the grief you are experiencing with your website. If you would like direction on removing Paid Memberships Pro from your site please send us a message through the contact form here: https://www.paidmembershipspro.com/contact/

In the last two years since you originally purchased membership we did change the structure and pricing of our support memberships. We did this with full disclosure to our members and offered discounts as well as the ability to maintain your lower rate for people that choose to do so.

I’m really sorry you had issues with your site. I hope you’ve moved on and found a solution that works for you.

I wanted to address individual points of your post since it contains misleading information that might confuse others reading this.

    > they offer a free version, that is useless for a subscription website.

The free version of PMPro in the wp.org repository is the full version and same exact one paying members get from our site.

    > So I pony up the fee to upgrade, and guess what? I STILL could not use it for a subscription website. It required another upgrade and another fee to get an add on. I ended up with a bunch of add=ons I never used nor needed.

We no longer offer the support only level that you first purchased before having to upgrade to access a Plus Add On (add ons we distribute from our site instead of the wp.org repository). We now have just one paid level for access to all of our add ons and our paid support. This seems expensive if you only need one add on. It’s a great deal if you need a lot of add ons. The pricing is meant to be simple. For sites that truly need just one add on and don’t want the other benefits of our paid membership, all of our add ons can be found for free at github.com.

    > Then, after they suckered me in, they raised the annual membership fee on me.

As Kim explained, all members were grandfathered into the price they originally paid.

    > they don’t offer any support for their free version

We do offer limited support on the .org forums here. Over 90% of the sites running PMPro do so without becoming a customer of ours and we are happy with that. It takes time to support the plugin, especially cases like the one you described that would require us to access your site for further debugging.

    > You cannot even view a troubleshooting forum, and there is no page for troubleshooting common errors and such, unless you pony up the 297.00 annual ransom they charge.

Again, the .org forums here are free to use. Our docs also only require a free sign up and we have a lot of troubleshooting guides on our site that are free: https://www.paidmembershipspro.com/category/troubleshooting-2/ Some of our tutorials require a paying membership. Some content on our site is behind a pay wall, typically because the content encourages further engagement from us that would require a paid membership anyway. People who email us and ask us nicely will get some direction from us for free.

    > Make no mistake, it is a RANSOM, because they load you up with so many add-ons that will not update if you dont pay the ransom, the remnants break your site.

Add ons downloaded from wp.org will update through wp.org for free. Other “Plus” add ons require a paid license from us to update through our servers. If you don’t have this license, you will need to update the plugins manually by downloading zip files off of GitHub.com. If you use a lot of our Plus add ons, you probably want our paid license to make things easier on you. We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars each year maintaining the plugin and add ons and have chosen charging for these services to ensure that we can continue to maintain the plugin.
