Buy product X and get product Y for free – how to give the chance to select Y?

I really don’t understand how to create this: Buy product X and get product Y for free – immediately added and visible in cart – product Y should be selected from user inside a rance of variation.
so, adding producy X (of a category) and get product Y (form other category – product Y has variations).
Could anyone help me?

But how to give the user the opportunity to decide what product or products add as free from a range of products?
Ex. The user buy 5 apples. He can add 5 free products and for example select 3 bananas and 2 onions. How can this could be done?
