Support » Plugin: Proxy Cache Purge » Buttons and carrots

    Hello Mika,

First of all I would like to say that I really appreciate this plugin. It is the only plugin that actually works as intended with the Varnish setup of my hosting company, so thanks for that!

What I do not like though, is that the plugin reminds me of the old RealPlayer. It installs itself into every possible menu:

    – In the top bar with buttons to purge and pause the cache.
    – In the “At a Glance” section with a button to empty the cache.
    – In the side bar on the left, with a Settings page explaining that you cannot change the settings (on Multisite).
    – It also adds a link to a .css file in the public facing HTML, something about an orange carrot.

With the exception of the carrot, I can understand how many users will find each of these menu items useful. I read somewhere that you actually get a lot of requests from users who cannot find these buttons. Others however, including myself, never use them and see it as unnecessary clutter. Luckily it is easy to remove the menu items I mentioned by adding a few //’s in the varnish-http-purge.php and settings.php files. But this has to be done each time the plugin is updated, which sometimes is several times a month.

Would it be a lot of work to move these options to a separate file that does not change with every update? That way those of us who do not like carrots and buttons do not have to change the files by hand each time.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

There shouldn’t (I hope…) be more changes to the css and images. Those are actually a decision I didn’t make, but my bosses did.

The carrot was removed, you may have noticed, in the last one. It’s a file/folder icon I didn’t design. The CSS is needed to display the menu option on the front end, which is used for ‘Purge THIS page’ if you need to do that so it’s kinda needed :/

โ€“ In the top bar with buttons to purge and pause the cache.
โ€“ In the โ€œAt a Glanceโ€ section with a button to empty the cache.
โ€“ In the side bar on the left, with a Settings page explaining that you cannot change the settings (on Multisite).

I need to remove that last one, I know. It’s on the to-do list to fix it for real :/

I can probably remove the second since I don’t think anyone uses it anymore now that it’s on the top bar.

That said, you should never be editing WP plugin files by hand in the first place. You can unhook the item in the menu bar with https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/classes/wp_admin_bar/remove_node/ for example.
