button change

  • This may seem like a begginers question, but I am new to wordpress so there you go. Also, I searched before asking and came up empty handed.

    I installed a new theme to use and have been changing some of the colours, etc… but I now want to change the buttons used in the navigation. They don’t have the look I want. I want to design my own button in photoshop and use it, but how do I do that? I searched through the image folder and saw no button file. I assumed I would find it, open it in photoshop, make my button, and save over that file, but I can’t find that file. Thanks in advance!

    without a theme name or a link to your blog with the “button” you want change being visible, or better yet, both of those we cant really help.

    .. and the button …

    that page does not provide a demo.. where is the button..

    (its very helpful for us if we dont have to jump through hoops asking questions)

    That’s the problem, I do not know what the button file is. My website is http://www.hauntonthehill.com

    And sorry, I just thought it was standard through all themes, which is why I did not provide a link.

    oke, lets start over .. how about a link to the page that contains what you want to change, and a description so we can pick it out of the page 🙂

    are you talking about those “buttons” at the top of the page, the about, etc.. links?

    If so, those arent images, thats all done with CSS. Look at your source:

    <ul id="nav">
    <li class="page_item current_page_item"><a href="http://www.hauntonthehill.com">Weblog</a></li>
    <li class="page_item"><a href="http://www.hauntonthehill.com/?page_id=10" title="MEDIA">MEDIA</a></li>
    <li class="page_item"><a href="http://www.hauntonthehill.com/?page_id=8" title="PRESS">PRESS</a></li>
    <li class="page_item"><a href="http://www.hauntonthehill.com/?page_id=2" title="ABOUT/CONTACT">ABOUT/CONTACT</a></li>
     <a href="http://pub9.bravenet.com/guestbook/694284038">GUESTBOOK</a>
    </ul>

    Yes those are the buttons I am talking about, but what I want to do is chang ethe look of the buttons entirely. I want to create my own buttons in photoshop and use them instead.

    You will need to find the loop where your list of html navigation links are split out, and replace those with your Photoshop image based buttons. There are some ramifications to using images, have you thought through the search engine, scaling, and database advantages by sticking with text based links?

    then you remove what is responsible for the code that i pasted from your theme files, and make the necessary changes to display your own buttons.

    if you look inside header.php, this is the relevant code that is constructing that:

    <ul id="nav">
    <li class="page_item<?php if (is_home()) {echo ' current_page_item';} ?>"><a href="<?php echo get_settings('home'); ?>">Weblog</a></li>
    <?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&title_li=&depth=1'); ?>
    </ul>

    well I would still enter the text in wordpress, I just want the buttons to look different. I still want the text to be enetered the same way. Just the shape of the button itself would be changed.

    im sorry — I said the wrong file, thats actually inside of navigation.php

    my bad!

    You are going to need to know some CSS to change the properties of that list to get a common look on the buttons to work consistently and still feed the links from the database.
