My friend owns a hardware store and asked me if it possible to upload over 5000 products online and ready to be shipped.

What would i need if I used wordpress?

Any eCommerce plugin would be able to handle that, like https://wordpress.org/plugins/woocommerce/ or https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-e-commerce/

The official showcase of some of the largest WordPress sites at https://wordpress.org/showcase/ doesn’t have any specific eCommerce category, but WooCommerce has their own showcase of some of their biggest stores at https://woocommerce.com/showcase/

I use a “pro” (paid) plugin, wpallimportpro, to upload a CSV to define WooCommerce products. It’s a lot easier to maintain a large number of products via CSV than the normal back-end tools. http://www.wpallimport.com/
