Build site while main site is live

I’m very new to WordPress. I just moved hosting providers from what used to be Intuit which had a “Page Builder” to another that now has a cPanel and I’m using WordPress.

In my newness, I hit “Publish” so currently, my site as it is, is up.

I’d really like to be able to work on it and tweak it and perfect it and then publish it, but, while I am doing all of this “store and test” it in a temporary location so to speak.

Once I am “finished” I’d like to replace what is my live site now with my finished site that I’ve had time to tweak and play with.

Is something like this possible? I’ve seen this done before but I have no idea how it was done or how to make it work.
