Build a wordpress site behind index.html?

  • bjansson

I am switching a regular site over to WordPress and i need to build it in the background. The wordpress site must be top level when completed so i can’t build it in a folder. And the old site must continue to function and be the primary site till the new site is completed.

I’ve done this before and simply changed the .htaccess file to allow access to the wordpress site temporarily so i could work on it, then changed it back to show the regular site when I was done. This time i need both sites to function at the same time.

    Is this possible?

I can’t figure out how to configure the .htaccess file if it is. You guys are so brilliant, i was hoping someone might have some advice?

    Thanks in advance 🙂

  • Build it in a folder then move it to the top level when you’re done.

Or if you’re not using pretty permalinks, visting domain.com/index.php should work.

Building it in a folder and then moving it won’t cause any database problems?

Exactly how should i set up the permalinks? or non-permalinks?

You’ll have to do a search and replace on the links. Read the documentation.

By default, pretty permalinks are not enabled.

Sweet! That works perfectly thank you very much 🙂
