I get false errors for files with accented latin characters, so it appears that non-ASCII URL handling is broken 🙁

Same for me, I have update the plugin with your line and it works. Thanks !
Hope the plugin author will include it for next plugin update.

The problem would appear to be that a URL may contain international characters even though the domain itself does not. AFAIK IDN encoding only applies to the hostname part of the URL and not to the path and filename components.
