Browser versions
-
Hi.
Because a client wanted the plugin uninstalled as it annoyed his editors (yeah…) it sparked a discussion where I noticed some things:The default value for when the notification should be shown again is 0. That’s probably a bit harsh. I’d suggest putting it to something between 1h and 24h. Otherwise the “Ignore” button is pretty pointless 🙂
The other thing is/are the versions the plugin should nag about. browser-update.org uses these defaults at the moment:
IE/Edge: more than 6 Versions behind (atm <= 10)
Firefox: more than 4 Versions behind (atm <= 55)
Opera: more than 4 Versions behind (atm <= 48)
Safari: more than 2 Versions behind (atm <= 9.1)
Chrome: more than 4 Versions behind (atm <= 62)As comparison, these are the highest versions that I can set in the WordPress plugin with the plugin up to date:
IE: 10
Firefox: 45
Opera: 37
Safari: 9.1No idea if this could be updated automatically from browser-update.org (at least the versions one can set) or would need regular updates to the plugin itself. In my view the ideal setting would be one that allows to follow the browser-update.org suggestions without specifying fixed versions that’d have to be updated manually in intervals.
My suspicion that this plugin might be to lenient on old browsers versions comes from the fact that recent Firefox is version 59, browser-update.org’s suggestion to go 4 versions earlier would result in 55 (as the site shows) but the highest version I can set in the plugin is 45 🙂
This is in no way meant as a complaint! I love the plugin, it is in our default roster as I think users of outdated browsers should nagged about it as often as possible 🙂
