Broken on Checkout – Smart Button

Hi there,

Upgrading from PHP 7.4 to 8.3 has broken the checkout on a website I manage. It hard exits when trying to render the checkout and stops executing. Unfortunately there is no error message even with DEBUG turned on. However I did get this from Sentry which I believe to be the issue (although I cannot say for certain).

WooCommerce\PayPalCommerce\Button\Endpoint\SimulateCartEndpoint::__construct(): 
Argument #1 ($smart_button) must be of type 
WooCommerce\PayPalCommerce\Button\Assets\SmartButton, 
WooCommerce\PayPalCommerce\Button\Assets\DisabledSmartButton given, 
called in /var/www/decspets.ie/wp-content/plugins/woocommerce-paypal-payments/modules/ppcp-button/services.php on line 172

Steps I have taken to resolve the issue:

Disabled all other plugins and checked for conflicts.
Deleted the plugin and re-installed it again.
Changed to Storefront.
Removed and reseated the Smart Button locations.

The issue persists, and I believe this to be an issue directly with the core of the plugin. The button renders fine on the cart pages which is strange.

I have consulted with the rest of our team regarding this matter. Although we tested the plugin with PHP 8.3 and didn’t encounter any issues, it’s important to note that PHP 8.3 is not yet officially supported by our plugin. We haven’t conducted in-depth tests for this version of PHP yet. Generally, we wouldn’t expect major compatibility issues, but as your case illustrates, unexpected behavior can occur.

The error you’ve described does not seem directly related to PHP 8.3. However, given that you and others have reported this issue, we’ve created an internal ticket to investigate further. In the meantime, we recommend trying out the 2.4.3-rc2 version of the plugin, which you can download from here. Please install this version to see if it resolves the issue on your site.

Any additional information you can provide about how to reproduce the error would be extremely helpful and could expedite the resolution process.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have tried using the rc2 version of this plugin to no avail. I think the rc2 fixes the variable product (I believe) but it’s broken with any product specifically on the checkout.

Hi @inpsydekrystian would you mind providing me with other relevant tickets that have reported similar problems? I would like to see if there are any other resolutions if at all possible as it’s affecting our prod traffic.

I have also noticed some other errors in debug.log

I have reviewed our records and found a similar reported issue, which you can view here: WooCommerce PayPal Payments Issue #1916.

As you can see, it’s not the same as your case, but the error codes are identical. From what I can see, the bug request related to your problem is already being analyzed by the developers.
