# broken media files

 * Hello,
 * I have been having a terribly hard time importing files into my media library.
   I have read a lot on the forums and google, and here is what I have tried (nothing
   has changed the situation yet):
 * 1. Changed file permissions to 755.
 * 2. Created a php.ini file in the root directory of wp, where I wrote:
    max_execution_time
   = 300 max_input_time = 300 memory_limit = 12M
 * 3. Installed “Add from server” plugin, then used FTP to place my image in a directory
   that I labeled “media” and put in wp-content/uploads. I can acces the files but
   they still show up broken when I use the plugin.
 * 4. (And this is probably very wrong and dangerous: I’m new at this) I made ANOTHER
   php.ini file which I placed in the media directory itself.
 * 5. Came here to see if anyone else may have a suggestion. Thanks in advance for
   your help!

 * Go to Admin -> Settings -> Media and make sure both the Store uploads in this
   folder and Full URL path to files entries are blank and Save Changes.

 * Hello,
 * Thank you kindly for the tip: this sounds like a terrific easy fix. That is why
   I am a little confused as to why, in the updated version of wp, it has completely
   been removed!
 * Instead of a using a simple checkbox as you mentioned above, it seems things 
   are more complex, as mentioned in [this](http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-change-the-default-media-upload-location-in-wordpress-3-5/)
   tutorial, with the following warning in bold:
    Note: This tutorial is not for
   beginners. Use it only if you know what you are doing.
 * Unfortunatley I am indeed a beginner.
 * Is there any other option to fix using the above suggestion?
