• 0.2.3 worked fine for ages, but updating to 1.01 has broken my site. I’ll have to downgrade until this is fixed which is a hassle.

Unfortunately “has broken my site” is no useful description of an issue so of course there will be no fix available.

    Thanks for your friendly response.

The site just shows blank pages when 1.0.1 of the theme is activated. This includes the WordPress admin pages. To get anything back I have to rename the theme folder so that it fails back to the default.

In my error_log I have the following:

[09-Jun-2014 12:06:23] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/XXXXXX/public_html/wp-content/themes/gray-and-square/functions.php on line 5

    I hope this helps.

This is because your PHP version is deprecated. You need at least PHP 5.3 which was released in Jun 2009 (five years ago…). Time for an update, hm? 😉

Shared hosting – out of my control.

Perhaps you could make your theme check for prerequisites rather than fail in a mysterious way? That way we would have avoided this whole pleasant exchange.

Sorry, but we cannot support or check for environment components which are older than 12 months. This makes no sense and would slow down the whole theme – even for users with the latest PHP version.

Maybe you could ask your hoster for an update to the latest version of PHP or you could change to another hoster. Alone the missing security updates from the last five years would make me think about an hoster change… 😉

I get the same error, and my host is currently running PHP 5.4.32. Installing this theme resulted in my site being entirely broken – no matter what page I look at, all I get is:

Warning: Unexpected character in input: ‘\’ (ASCII=92) state=1 in /home2/…/wp-content/themes/gray-and-square/functions.php on line 5

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home2/…/wp-content/themes/gray-and-square/functions.php on line 5

I gotta say, I don’t really like the theme author’s response to iom100uk on this. Will try to fix my site, but will be wary of this author’s themes in the future.

@swamp_monkey: This problem is already solved. I posted the solution in the 4st answer of this thread.

I get the same error, and my host is currently running PHP 5.4.32.

Wie sagt man “I’m sorry,” auf Deutsch?

It appears I owe you an apology, Dennis. Although my control panel reports that I am running PHP 5.4.32, running phpinfo indicates that it was indeed 5.2.

So, I’m sorry for my previous comments.
