Breaks register_new_user?

When I try to

$user_id = register_new_user($username, $email);

$user_id returns an error for not providing a password only when TML is installed.

I’m basically trying to create a user programatically with the status pending and an activation mail sent to $email (TML moderation installed and option ‘Require email activation’ checked).
