• On a mobile phone my menu, breadcrumbs, then title above copy… all say the same thing and seem redundant. Half the phone screen is used for those same words…

Breadcrumbs don’t seem to be interactive in some way. Are they supposed to be?

Do breadcrumbs seem like a good use of the space?

I’ve looked at the css file. I could apparently make it less high, but I’m not sure how to get rid of the words… or is that somehow a bad idea?

  • They’re supposed to indicate to the user where they are in a site. They’re probably more useful on sites with many different pages several levels deep. For example, if you had a site that was devoted to animals, and you classified animals by type (Reptiles, Mammals, Insects, Birds), and then under each type you had individual animals, then a breakcrumb like this might be useful:

    Home > Mammals > Dogs > Poodle

Then a visitor can click the Mammals link and be taken to the Mammals page.

I don’t use breadcrumbs on my sites. If you want to include one, but not have it be so predominant, you can just show the text instead of displaying a gray bar.

    Hi CrouchingBruin,
Maybe I did my menu wrong. My site’s breadcrumbs don’t do that.

Do they get their cue from the menu, or was there something else in which I was supposed to show the way the pages are linked?

    http://www.health-boundaries.com/negative-ions/

That’s three pages in, but the breadcrumbs show only the page name…

Even though you’ve set up a certain relationship in the menu, you have to set up the Parent-Child relationship within the pages itself.

Go and edit your Negative Ions page. On the right side should be a section called Page Attributes. If you do not see it, then click the Screen Options tab in the upper right corner, check the box labeled Page Attributes, and it will appear.

In the Page Attributes section will be a drop-down list labeled Parent. For the Negative Ions page, you want to select Epsom Salt as the parent. Click the Update button to save your changes.

Then go edit your Epsom Salt page and make the Numbness page its parent.

Finally, you want to go edit your Numbness page and make its parent the B12 Symptoms page.

Once you’ve established the parent-child relationships of these pages, then you should see the correct breadcrumbs when you go to the Negative Ions page. You’ll also see the correct page relationships when you view the list of pages from the admin dashboard. The child pages will be indented under its parent page.

    Oh My Gosh!

    Thank you! I’ll try that.

    That is so COOL!

The only thing is, I might have done my menu incorrectly.

I used my home page as my first menu item. But “Health Boundaries” doesn’t come up in the list of parents….

    Hi CrouchingBruin…
In thinking about what you might tell me, I wondered if instead of “health boundaries” it might be out of alphabetical order as “static home page”…

It IS out of alphabetical order, it’s the last item on the list.

    🙂

Thank you SO much for all your help! (and inspiration)

New question re Breadcrumbs: can a page have more than one parent?

No, a page cannot have more than one parent.

Did you set the parent of your Negative Ions page? The breadcrumbs bar still looks the same.

    Hi 🙂

No, I started on the other side. Then I got tired and started making mistakes, so I watched an episode.

I can’t use a page under more than one other page?

I also tried to make the breadcrumbs bar less tall, up and down. But it doesn’t look as if that worked.

And, I tried to get rid of the yellow above the heading picture, but that didn’t work, OR the caches have yet to update…

I got a mobile phone, so I can see my site very differently now. 🙂
