I have breadcrumbs enabled through my Yoast plugin, and for “Taxonomy to show in breadcrumbs for content types” I have “Catagories” selected. However, it only shows my primary category in the breadcrumbs (“Recipe”), not the subcategory (Appetizers). When I disable my Yoast plugin my breadcrumbs display perfectly.

How can I get my subcategories to appear as part of the breadcrumb?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi,

We would like some more information.

    A. Can you confirm you are using the most recent Yoast SEO, v9.7?

    B. Can you confirm you are using WordPress 5.1? You can check by clicking on the W in the top left and selecting About. If you need to update, please check with your host provider. Please know that if you are using an older version of WordPress Core you may experience unexpected behavior with Yoast. This guide explains more: https://yoast.com/why-we-dont-support-old-wordpress-versions/.

    C. Are all your non-Yoast plugins and themes also updated?

    D. If you go to the page https://www.foxvalleyfoodie.com/buffalo-chicken-meatballs/ and change the primary category to be that subcategory, does the issue resolve?

Yes I am using Yoast v9.7, all plugins are up to date and WordPress 5.1.

Yes, changing the primary category to the subcategory does fix the issue – for that single post. I would prefer not to have to go through 600 posts and manually change the primary category in each one. Is that the only way to fix the issue, or do I have another option? The breadcrumbs only appear incorrectly when I have Yoast activated. If I deactivate Yoast they appear correctly by default.

    Hello,

Thanks for getting back to us.

To save time, you can bulk edit categories by following these steps:
1- Go to your Posts overview
2- Select the subcategory from the “Categories” drop-down
3- Select “Edit” from the “Bulk Actions” dropdown
    4- Click on “Apply”

    See steps here: https://www.screencast.com/t/N3CY69Lif

We hope this helps and let us know if you run into issues.
