My suggestion would be to consider a plugin for this. Most plugins will not only create the breadcrumbs but also add them to the site for you.

You have quite a few options for this here. A few tips on how to choose a plugin:

1. Choose a plugin that has been updated fairly recently. Plugins over 6 months old can get very old very quickly, and you should probably stay away from any plugin that has not been updated in over a year. This is specially true for large & complex plugins.
2. Look at how many active installs they have. Plugins in the several tens of thousands and above should be solid ones.
3. Look at its ratings, specially at any 1 star ratings as they may be pointing to serious flaws or shortcomings in the plugin.
4. Check the forums support in the plugins page, to make sure the developers are actively responding to support questions.
