Support » Plugin: BulletProof Security » BPS 2.5 caused admin dashboard to stop workring

I just installed BPS 2.5 on a site that was previously working fine. The site’s front end still works, and the admin sidebar is fine, but nothing appears in the admin interface’s main content area. So I’m unable to do anything, including disabling BPS.

    Any ideas?

Yes, you can definitely help. 🙂 I will be uploading a new BPS zip file to our host server in a couple of hours with the new code that will hopefully fix this issue. I will post a link back here when the new BPS zip file is uploaded. If you would download, install and test the new BPS zip file that would be very much appreciated. If everything works correctly for you (no errors and other problems, MScan option settings are working, etc) then we will release a new BPS plugin version with this new fix.

I’m very interested in this fix as well. Thanks for the work!

A new BPS zip file with the open_basedir “fix” can be downloaded here by clicking this link > https://www.ait-pro.com/bps-fix/bulletproof-security.zip

Do these steps below and let me know what happens. Also please test MScan and run a scan and let me know if everything works ok or if you see any problems or errors.

    1. Use FTP or your web host control panel file manager and delete the BPS plugin folder: /bulletproof-security/.
    2. Install that attached new BPS zip file using the WordPress Plugin Upload Zip installer.
    3. Go to MScan and test running a scan.

Note: I believe open_basedir is just having a problem with the Directory Iterator code that deals with getting hosting account root folders and open_basedir will not have a problem with other Iterator code that is iterating files and not directories, but it is possible open_basedir will also freaks out with file iterating code used to scan files. If scanning has problems with iterating files due to open_basedir restrictions then additional conditional code will need to be created to accomodate open_basedir.

I installed the test version before seeing your warning about the Setup Wizard, but it seems to be fine anyway. No issues with missing Dashboard functionality. BPS itself seems fine. I even ran the Setup Wizard but it didn’t seem to do any harm.

    Thanks!

I did try running an Mscan, but it just kept looping, calculating the scan time but never really getting anywhere. The log is empty.

The Setup Wizard code is actually already ok. I spaced out on that for a second. Ok so the new “fix” for open_basedir definitely works. So the question remaining is whether or not file scanning is working or not due to open_basedir having a problem with iterating files/scanning files. Try this > under the MScan Hosting Account Root Folders checkbox options > check only your actual WordPress installation folder checkbox and try to run another scan. If your WordPress site is installed in the root hosting account folder and not in an individual folder and you have other WordPress sites under this hosting account then uncheck all other folders except for the wp-admin, wp-includes and wp-content folders. Then run another scan. Also check for any php errors. Additional code may need to be added to accomodate open_basedir file iterations.

Oh and you need to save your MScan options after selecting hosting account root folder checkboxes before running a scan.

Update: We have confirmed that open_basedir also breaks file scanning and are working on solution. There are 2 possible outcomes: #1. we can accomodate open_basedir. #2. we will need to display a message like “open_basedir” is enabled on your server. Unfortunately, open_basedir breaks MScan file scanning and MScan scanning will not work unless open_basedir is disabled”. Hopefully we can get the #1 result.

Ok testing is completed and we were able to get MScan working for open_basedir, but there are issues that will need to taken care of in a later version of BPS. We will be releasing a BPS version probably in a couple of hours. Note: For now the MScan Estimated Scan time loop will loop several times and the MScan Progress Bar will appear not to work correctly. See why below.

Common known issues with open_basedir: Causes significant increase in memory and resource usage for a website/server.

Problems for MScan as a result of open_basedir: Scanning takes 6 times longer, which throws off all estimated scan time calculations, which throws off the Scan Progress Bar, etc etc etc.

Future solution in a later version of BPS: Create new estimated scan time caculations based on open_basedir for usage within separate open_basedir conditions.

Okay, cool. I actually wasn’t planning to use the scan feature right away, so as long as the other BPS features work, I’m good. Anyway, thanks for the help!

BPS 2.6 was released yesterday that accomodates open_basedir.
