Support » Plugin: Shortlinks by Pretty Links - Best WordPress Link Tracking Plugin » Bookmarklet works on one site, but not another

I love this bookmarklet feature and have used it often. But recently I made a new site which is an exact clone of my other site.

But on this new, clone site, the bookmarklet does not work. When I click it, instead of generating a pretty link, it just redirects me to my site’s home page.

The 2 sites are identical with the exception that the new site I’m having this trouble on has an SSL cert (let’s encrypt) and the other site does not. All plugins are the same. Even so, I tried disabling all plugins but the bookmarklet problem remained, indicating it is not a plugin conflict.

I also deleted pretty links and reinstalled it and that still did not fix the issue.

Could it be that the SSL cert is causing this issue?

Well, I “fixed” this problem on the “problem” site by enabling the “Enable Permalink Fix” option under Pretty Links >> Options. But I am completely flabbergasted as to how this solution worked and why I need it on one site, but not another identical site (identical theme, plugins, permalink settings, etc.).

I also found out that the SSL cert has nothing to do with it because I installed Pretty Links on it just to check and the bookmarklet works fine with the SSL cert.

Though this problem is “fixed” I’d like to hear any theories on this matter. I don’t like enabling “fixes” when there’s no apparent logic to the fix or the problem.

And just when I thought I couldn’t be flabbergasted more than before…

I decided to see what would happen if I disabled the “Enable Permalink Fix” option and, lo and behold, the problem did not come back.

I am now using the bookmarklet without the “Enable Permalink Fix” option checked, whereas I was not able to do so before.

So I suggest to anyone having problem with Pretty links – go to the Options section and check the “Enable Permalink Fix” option to see if that fixes your problem. Then disable the option to see if the problem comes back or not, (just out of curiosity, I guess).
