I’ve solved the Visual “problem”, but I still can’t get BOLD or Italics to appear in the actual post — the editor shows the change, but not when the text is posted.
Perhaps your theme is coded that way – a link to a page showing the problem would be useful.
The “Visual” function disappeared again:

And I just tried to edit text, and neither Visual or Text mode lets me write content.
I have no idea what “Theme” I’m using, or how to edit it…
I’m using a MAC, and the current version of Firefox.
I’m using the Good News theme…
Looks like that theme uses excerpts on the blog page –
http://www.timefortwo.com/blog/
And excerpts strip out links and formatting by design –

If you want to change that, the easiest way will be to use a plugin such as:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-excerpt/
I installed the plug-in you recommended, and the Visual editor did come up – thank you very much. However, when I “bolded” a word and then looked at Preview, the word did not come up bold.
Since that’s a commercial theme, you’ll probably need to ask the developer about this:

But you could first try deactivating your plugins to see if any are causing problems. And try switching to a default theme (Twenty Fifteen) to see if the issue persists there.
I switched themes and the bold worked. However, the theme I was using had been customized in appearance, and I don’t want lose that “look and feel”.
I tried contact the theme developer, and I’m waiting for the password to be sent so I can log in.
I really appreciate all the help you’ve given me, THANK YOU!
