Can I say bloody hell on this forum? I hope so. Because that’s the only phrase that has been leaving my mouth for the past hour.

I am TRYING to import my blogger files. I know I have all the fields correct because I was already publishing it on my own server (www.beyondelsewhere.ca). Only with all the blogger problems that have been going on it keeps crashing when I click Republish Entire Blog.

It finally reached 28% but then I get this:

    THERE WERE ERRORS:
    001 java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out2005_01_01_wordpress.php

Is this on their end or my end? I get a lot of errors like that if I am trying to publish a new post (one of the many reasons that I am switching to my own server and WordPress). Should I just try again later? Or should I just give up trying to import and start a brand spanking new blog?

    Suggestions will be extremely wonderful!!

    Cat

You can almost anything, but the moderater will come in and censor you if you get too “blue”.

http://codex.wordpress.org/Troubleshooting will help you with your troubles, probably, but I would start with http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_from_other_blogging_software
    to really get going.

Having spent too much time converting my static html into MT format and then importing it into the database with the import-mt.php tool, it takes the littlest icky that is out of whack to screw up your import. I’d start looking at exactly where it breaks to find out if there is a bit of something that isn’t quite matching the successful ones.

thanks. 🙂 blogger is having way too many problems right now. so all i’m working on doing is getting my blog to show up for wordpress… only it’s not. i’m about ready to give up all around. 🙂

I know it is darkest before the darkest…whatever 😉 but then the light bulb goes off.

You can spent ages trying to get WordPress to resemble your old blog, so I’d start there if you have “fiddle” time between waiting for the rest to “work”. When you leave one thing alone for a bit, coming back to it seems to make it “work” better or righter or something. Good luck with it.

Hi, all, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve hacked out an import-blogger.php script that imports comments, too. Don’t delete your Blogger blog! Get the script right here and drop it in your wp-admin folder.

Yes, it will even import the comments if you have already imported the posts and categorized them. The one weakness is that if you have changed the names or timestamps of any of your Blogger posts, the post will be re-imported and the comments attached to the new copy. Other than that, it’s a breeze.

    Cheers!

I’ve followed the WordPress blogger import instructions, but I keep getting the same error from blogger when I try to publish:

    001 java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out/condipundit.com/2005_03_01_wordpress.php

I’ve checked all my settings, and they are correct. And my other blogger blogs are all saving to my server correctly. But this error keeps happening, no matter where I try to save the files (I’ve tried saving them to other server accounts, to no avail).

Any ideas what might be the problem?

As an update: I was never able to fix the error, but I found a workaround.

I saved each of my Blogger monthly archive pages as HTML, then opened them in a code editor and cut out all the Blogspot lines, then saved them as .php files. Then I uploaded the files via FTP to the correct spot on my WordPress server, and hit “import.”

    It worked.

I had the same problem with Blogger not republishing my files, also getting stuck on 28%. Eventually, I found the best way of getting round it was to log in, republish the blog, let it get stuck ay 28%, immediately sign out, sign back in again, and everything worked fine. Don’t ask why this should work.

I was saying a lot worse than “bloody hell” at the time.

Update: used Andy Skelton’s updated import-blogger.php script, and it works beautifully. (See time difference between my previous post and this one to see how long it took from downloading to deleting old Blogger files). It is definitely the only way to do it – however, use my tip above; Blogger tried to tell me some kind of ‘engineer’ was on the case when it crashed trying to republish. Signing in and out works fine.

    Thanks Andy !

Andy Skelton’s script sounds great if only I could download it!

    The page loads ok… then nothing happens… except for this on the page: “<link rel=”alternate” type=”application/rss+xml” title=”RSS 2.0″ href=””

    Can someone enlighten me??

    Thanks in anticipation!

Can’t access Andy’s script. Loading times out. What’s going on?
