I just launched my very first blog last Wednesday. I set up the blog subscription widget on my sidebar. I can see that 23 people have signed up for blog updates thus far. I can find a list of their email addresses. Now, I added a new post this morning – about seven hours ago – and, as far as I know, none of my subscribers have received an email notifying them of the new post.

How long does it normally take for the notification email to go out?
What are the likely reasons why the emails aren’t going out, if they should have gone out by now?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Update: I sent out a brief post to tell readers about the glitch – and the emails went out for this one immediately! Still don’t know what the problem was yesterday. Any insights are appreciated.

Emails normally go out as soon as you hit the Publish button, but a few things can conflict with the Subscriptions module:

    • If you import posts into your site, they won’t be sent to subscribers. This is to avoid a massive wave of emails whenever someone imports a lot of old posts into their site.
    • If you use a plugin to duplicate or clone existing posts, the posts created via these plugins are usually not sent to subscribers.
    • If your site wasn’t properly connected to WordPress.com, we wouldn’t know about the new posts and wouldn’t be able to send out any emails. This may happen when using a plugin to restrict access to your site (like a maintenance or a security plugin for example), thus blocking all communication between your site and third-party services like WordPress.com (where your email are sent from).

If that doesn’t seem to apply to your site, I’m afraid I can’t really help without having a closer look at your site.

If this ever happens again, could you immediately use Jetpack’s Debugger module to send us some more information about your site, so we can take a closer look at your site, its plugins, and its connection to WordPress.com?

    1. Go to the Jetpack page in your dashboard.
    2. Click on the Debug link appearing at the bottom of the page.
    3. Click the link that says “click here to contact Jetpack support.”
    4. Fill in the description box and your name and email address.
    5. Click the “Contact Support” button to send us the debug results privately. It’s best not to post this information on public forums, as it contains private details about your site.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply!

No emails went out at all for my first post. However. I did two posts today, and all emails went out immediately. I don’t know why the first post didn’t trigger anything, but the widget is now working properly.
