 * My posts started using something else besides the custom post templates I created
   or the single.php by default and now they look wrong. (should have white background,
   one picture, etc.) I can’t figure out what happened or what they are now using.
   I edit single.php and nothing happens. Any ideas? I’ve deactivated plugins etc
   to get to the bottom of it with no success.
 * Sample post that should be using single.php but doesn’t seem to be.

 * the single post has some validation errors [http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.halseyschools.com%2F2013%2F04%2Fthey-are-just-playing%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0](http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.halseyschools.com%2F2013%2F04%2Fthey-are-just-playing%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0)
   which might be causing the formatting problem

 * when testing any changes to single.php, are you taking into account that your
   site is using a caching plugin?
 * what happens if you replace single.php with an unedited version?
 * possibly try to add a html comment with the template name to each template of
   the theme to get more clarity which templates are used;
 * general, per template hierarchy, if single.php is broken or non-existent, index.
   php would show the single post: [http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy](http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy)

 * Thanks. It’s using index.php for all posts. I simply copied the code from my
   single.php post and now it displays correctly. But I still don’t know why it
   won’t use the single.php or the two templates I created using _custom post template_.
   This all has been working fine for many months. Don’t know what changed.
 * Thanks for your help.
