Support » Requests and Feedback » Block format

  • I just wanted to write to ask that you develop some kind of switch to allow people to decide between the new block format and the old without having to download a plugin for the classic editor. The new block format is clunky and not very user friendly. It has caused more than a few problems with my sites and now the classic editor plugin is a regular for me on any new customers site. Thanks.

  • As they say, “that ship has sailed”, more than 2 years ago.
The block editor is the way WP defaults and is being incorporated more and more into the admin, and how themes will work. The Classic editor plugin page says

Classic Editor is an official WordPress plugin, and will be fully supported and maintained until at least 2022, or as long as is necessary.

They will not consider an option to put that choice into WP, as it was already moved out to a plugin from the beginning.

To get away from blocks, you’d need to stay at a lower version of WP or switch to a fork (like ClassicPress) or try one of the many static site generators out there (which produce faster, more secure sites) (WP2Static is one way to transition).
