We’re using Yoast in a multisite environment and are in the same situation as another user (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/bloated-yoast_post_meta-table/) – we have disabled the link counter on both sites, but these post_meta tables keep repopulating and are becoming quite large.

Any idea why disabling the link counter on both sites isn’t resolving the issue? Is there something else we need to do?

  • Hi,

We would expect that if you disabled the internal linking tool, no new rows would be created. We would like some more information.

    1. Can you confirm you are using WordPress 5.3.2? You can check by clicking on the W in the top left and selecting About. If you need to update, please check with your host provider. Please know that if you are using an older version of WordPress Core you may experience unexpected behavior with Yoast. This guide explains more: https://yoast.com/why-we-dont-support-old-wordpress-versions/.

    2. Can you confirm you are using the most recent Yoast SEO, v13.1? If you update, does the issue resolve?

    3. Are all your non-Yoast plugins and themes also updated?

    4. Can you confirm your server has all the right requirements?  If you are not sure, speak to your host provider. This guide explains more: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/plugin-requirements/.

Yes, that was my expectation as well, which is why I was shocked when the table kept populating itself.

    1) Yes, we are on 5.3.2.
    2) We are on 13.0 in our live environment today, but will be pushing 13.1 to our live environment later tonight. I can re-verify the same result after that is complete.
    3) Yes, all other plugins/themes are updated.
    4) Yes, passes all requirements. MariaDB 10.0.23, PHP Memory of 512mb, PHP version of 7.3.

Any other ideas of items I should check? Is there anything I can provide you that may help more?

Thanks for taking the time on this.

    Hi,

This is an issue. Even with the feature disabled we are still adding rows to the table. We apologize for the trouble you are experiencing with our plugin. An issue report is currently open with our development team for this issue.

In the meantime, we suggest signing up for our newsletter as that is where we will announce product changes and updates. You can sign-up for it here https://yoast.com/newsletter/.

    Hi,

Our developers indicate that you should use the filter listed here https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/pull/12751 to disable it.

Unfortunately, there’s a difference between the support we can offer and the level of programming needed to change (core) features of our plugin. Since we don’t want to take the risk that we break your website by suggesting incorrect or incomplete code, we cannot advise you on how to make such changes. And even though we cannot be of any assistance, you’re completely free to change anything in the plugin to better suit your needs.

We highly recommend checking out our list of Yoast Partners here https://yoast.com/yoast-partners/ in case you are in need of development.

We will also keep this issue open for 2 weeks in case someone from the community can help. Perhaps a developer watching these forums can assist further. After which, we will close in order to keep the overview.
