Blank screen on install.php (2 posts)

I downloaded the latest (wordpress-1.0.2-blakely.tar.gz) and tried to install it on my server as root. I tried to follow the 5 minute instructions. I copied wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php and updated the DB_USER, etc. variables to my MySQL login info.
Then I went to /wp-admin/install.php, and it returns a blank page.
    I'm running Apache 2.0.48 , Mandrake Linux 10.0, PHP/4.3.4, and MySQL 4.0.18'-Max'.
Are these all approved versions for WordPress?
I'm also not convinced that I have PHP MySQL module installed properly. How can I check?
