• Hi – me again. I love this plugin, especially since the add to menu feature was added.
I am having trouble again with a site – it is set up as multisite, and I have downloaded and network enabled the bilingual Linker plugin – it is also activated on both of the sites in the network. However I cannot figure out how to get the link into the menu on the 2 sites in the network (English and French).
On other sites i have used it on, the option is available in the Screen Options area at the top of the dashboard, but I don’t seem to have that on either of the sites, nor is it in the network dashboard.
Does the menu option only work on individual sites and not on networked ones?
Or am I just not looking in the right place?

    Thanks,

    M.A. Bell

  • If you are talking about the ability to add a menu item linking to the translation of items, this is normally available under the menu builder, in Appearance.

I know it’s usually there – but it has not shown up. I have tried everything, clearing caches on server and my local machine, even as far as rebooting my computer, but it’s still not there.

I am now seeing the Bilingual Linker in the menu options one the French site, but not in the English one.
And even though it is appearing in the menu options of the french site, I can’t get it to add to the menu.
This is really frustrating – The sites are supposed to go live today and there is no linkage between them.
Can you tell me anything that might help?

Sorry for lack of response, I have not had a chance to build a multisite setup to test this out. To get out of the bind, have you thought about adding the menu item by calling the PHP function from Bilingual Linker to display the menu item?

Also, is the plugin activated at the network level or under each site instance?

Ah, jeez. For some reason the second site is not showing as its own domain in the list of networked sites, but there is an empty folder showing instead. I must have screwed up in my network setup and declared a subfolder instead of a second separate domain name. I don’t know how to map a different domain name to a networked site, and I’m not sure it can be done after the fact, so I will remove that folder “site” and try to set up the first domain as a simple non-networked site, then maybe things will work.

You say “To get out of the bind, have you thought about adding the menu item by calling the PHP function from Bilingual Linker to display the menu item?”
I have no idea how to call it to make it display the menu item – I am not terribly proficient in PHP – I have had some success before now by putting the function in the header in its own div and styling it with CSS, but in this case when I try putting the function in the header it breaks the theme no matter where I put it.

So in any case, it’s not your plugin, it’s my wonky setup.

    Thanks,
    M.A.

For adding the PHP call to the theme, I could do it for you if you tell me which theme you are using. If a paid theme, I would need a copy of the theme files temporarily.

But I could only do this PHP theme work this evening or over the week-end.

OK – I have the second domain set up outside the network with its own installation of WP, and I have installed and activated Bilingual Linker, set the parameters, and I can see it in the menu options, but it still won’t allow me to add it to the menu. I cannot figure out what i am doing wrong – this has worked for me before. I’m going a bit crazy here…

Yannick – I appreciate your offer – if I cannot figure it out by this afternoon I will get in touch on your website and arrange to give you what you need to do the work. I’m using Avada – and it’s a PITA if you ask me – but it’s too much work done to start over.

    Thanks a lot,
    M.A.

I will test to see why the menu item is not working when I get home tonight.

I’m still trying to dismantle the network and keep only the one site on it.
I’ll be in touch later, I’m pretty sure.

There was indeed something wrong with the menu builder item to add Bilingual Linker. I have just pushed out a new version (2.3.1) that should be available shortly. Please upgrade and try the change to see if you can now properly add the item to the menu and let me know if it works.

Please consider donating to support this plugin’s development.

I’ll be trying it out today – donation made, and thanks!!

Let me know if you run into any issues. I will be close to a PC for most of the day.
